Morula: Female Sea Urchins release thousands of eggs and sperm into the open water. Once the egg is fertilized by the sperm, the egg begins to grow in size and eventually start dividing itself.
Blastula: The Purple Sea Urchin then begins to divide itself. In 2 to 3 hours, it will have divided itself around 6 times. Afterward, a blastulum (a larva surrounded by protective hairs) hatches from the eggs membrane.
Gastrula: The first body part that is formed is the anus. Then, working its way down the body, the gut is formed and on the other side of the gut the mouth is formed.
Pluteus: A week later, the skeleton starts growing. The two arms that they use for eating begin to form (which are protected my internal calcareous rods).
Adult: A month after the Pluteus stage, the larva sinks to the floor for metamorphosis. The larva as all of the adult componets but it needs to grow. For the next 2 to 5 years, the larva will lay on the ocean floor and grow.
